Relatives of missing fisherman Darius Peters are appealing for assistance. Peters, 31, along with Kenton Bernard, 41, left on a fishing vessel on June 21 from Rampanalgas, Balandra.
Derlene Peters, 34, the sister of Darius, said the T&T Coast Guard is giving the family a run around. Speaking with Guardian Media on Friday, she said, “Every time we call the Coast Guard, they keep saying that they are awaiting information from Venezuela. It’s been nine days now and we are hearing nothing.
That’s all we are hearing. It’s like they are not helping with nothing, and this is overbearing now. We would like the Minister of National Security to get involved in this.” She said her brother was accustomed to heading out into the north coast waters to fish. She said Darius and Bernard went out on a 28-foot fishing vessel named “In God’s Hands”. She said Darius has a two-year-old son who lives with his mother who is also making inquiries.
“Everybody has tried contacting different agencies. We are trying all how and we are getting a lot of run around. I called the Coast Guard two minutes ago and they are saying they are awaiting information. We reached out to a search and rescue group in Venezuela who had no information.” Derlene said other fishing vessels with search parties went to search for the missing men.
Derlene said families of both men are planning a prayer session on Saturday. Derlene said in 2015 Joel Peters, one of her brothers went missing when he went to Carenage and never returned. She said, “We never get a phone call, we don’t know if he is dead, if he is living. The family is also in a mess because this is a second person who has gone missing.”
