Homicide detectives are looking at robbery as a possible motive for the murder of Barrackpore contractor Deonarine Mahase.
Around 5 am on Tuesday, a gunman shot and killed the 62-year-old owner of DM Contractors Ltd at Kanhai South Trace, as he was leaving the home of a close female friend.
However, a relative who asked not to be identified, was not convinced that robbery was the motive, as neither Deonarine’s van nor his money was stolen.
He said usually, Deonarine would have about $10,000 with him.
Reports stated that Deonarine spent the night at his friend’s house on Wilson Road, Barrackpore, where he was accustomed to staying.
Around 5 am, he was walking towards his white B2500 Mazda van, which was parked in front of the house, to go to his business.
The woman heard several gunshots and saw a masked gunman wearing a fisherman’s hat standing over Deonarine’s body on the ground, under a shed on the premises. The gunman pointed his firearm at her and said, “Stay inside.”
She complied. Shortly after, she checked and discovered that he was dead.
Police said Deonarine’s van was ransacked.
The relative said they were praying the truth would be revealed and they would get justice. Deonarine was a father of three and grandfather of five.
Homicide Bureau Region Three officers are investigating.
