Truck driver Ronald Marchan left his home to do an honest day’s work but never returned home. He was stabbed by a man eight times as he delivered goods to a grocery in Point Fortin on Wednesday.
He succumbed to his injuries at hospital.
Marchan’s assailant later surrendered to police and handed over a blood-stained folding knife, which was allegedly used in the attack. He reportedly admitted to stabbing Marchan saying he became enraged during an argument over a parked truck.
Police said Marchan, 42 of Mota Trace, Tabaquite was stabbed in the chest, abdomen, and upper arm on Wednesday evening while delivering goods to Persad’s The Food King Supermarket.
Investigators said Marchan arrived at Tanner Street, Point Fortin around 7 pm driving a refrigerated truck to deliver goods. He stayed in the driver’s seat while his co-workers exited the vehicle.
Around 7:50 pm, the suspect approached Marchan, asking him to move the truck. Marchan explained the truck’s engine needed to remain on for refrigeration purposes, which led to an argument.
The suspect left but returned 10 minutes later, resuming the confrontation. Police said Marchan opened the driver’s door during the altercation, and the suspect stabbed him multiple times before walking away.
Supermarket employees took Marchan to the Point Fortin Hospital, where he died while receiving treatment.
CCTV footage captured the attack, and investigators are reviewing the video as part of their inquiries.
When contacted yesterday, Marchan’s common-law wife Andrea Jeremy said she was too distraught to speak.
“This is a real shock to us, I cannot believe this happened,” she said.
Police said an autopsy will be done on Marchan’s body on Monday at the Forensic Science Centre.
