A Tobago doctor was shot as she used her body as a human shield to protect her baby when gunmen opened fire outside Pablo’s Supermarket on Windward Road, Argyle yesterday.

Dr Ayana Parrisienne-James, 35, was injured in the attack on Thursday evening while she and her one-year-old daughter waited in their car.

Around 7.55 last night Parrisienne-James and her daughter were seated in their car when the shots rang out.

Her husband, who had stepped into the supermarket moments before, rushed back to the vehicle after hearing the gunfire. He found his wife in the back seat, crouched protectively over their daughter, bleeding from a wound in her right shoulder.

Parrisienne-James was immediately taken to Roxborough General Hospital, where she received treatment before being transferred to Scarborough General Hospital by ambulance.

Police officers from the Roxborough Police Station, along with members of the Tobago Divisional Task Force and the Guard and Emergency Branch, responded to the scene. They recovered five spent shells.

Investigations are ongoing.
