Thirty-three-year-old Simon Mahabir was sentenced to two years hard labour for possession of a homemade shotgun and possession of one round of 12-guage ammunition.
Mahabir was given two years each per offence when he appeared virtually before Magistrate Debby Ann Bassaw at the Rio Claro Magistrates’ Court. The sentences are to run concurrently.
Mahabir, an unemployed man, from Newlands Village,Guayaguayare, Mayaro, was held on Tuesday by officers attached to the Mayaro Criminal Investigations Department (CID) and Task Force, led by Sgt (Ag.) Mohammed, during a firearm eradication exercise.
During the period 9 am and 12.30 pm on Wednesday, police officers executed the exercise at a garden camp in the Newlands Village, Guayaguayare, Mayaro area where they allegedly found a homemade shotgun and one round of 12-gauge cartridge.
