A Cunupia woman who attempted to escape a runaway truck and ran across the road to avoid being mowed down, was still killed after being struck and thrown several feet away in some bushes.
Seeta Jagroop, who was also fondly called Aunty Annie, was said to have been waiting on a taxi at Washington Junction, Southern Main Road, Caroni, around 11.50 am yesterday when the accident occurred.
Eyewitnesses said the 52-year-old was on the southern side of the road when she saw the trailer truck careening out of control.
The victim, who lived at Mon Plasir Road, Cunupia, was said to have been alone and appeared to make the hasty decision to cross the road, imagining she would be safe.
It is believed the driver attempted to evade hitting Jagroop and tried to steer the truck away but ended up crossing the median and collided with her head-on.
Jagroop’s body was flung into nearby bushes upon impact, while the truck ran off the road and overturned.
The driver was said to have sustained a broken leg.
