Sanjiv Bachu’s five-wicket haul led South to a 112-run victory against North, in the T&T Cricket Board Under-15 North-South Classic at the National Cricket Center in Couva, on Thursday.
After winning the toss and electing to bat first, South openers Reyad Jerome and Zakariyya Mohammed shared an 88-run open partnership. Before Josiah Nicholls picked up the wicket of Mohammed for 25 runs.
Shortly after, Jerome departed as he was dismissed by Bachu for a top score of 44 runs from 57 deliveries, smashing seven boundaries. But Sachin Nandlal and Zane Maraj did not waste time at the crease, following through with a 71-run partnership. Maraj scored 39 from 44 balls, inclusive of six boundaries. The South team ended on 232 all out in 44.4 overs.
Bachu ended with figures of five for 25 in seven overs.
In chasing a target of 233, Justin Pamphille's early dismissal for five runs did not help the North side. Josiah Roberts and Brian Harricharan were able to share a very small partnership of 10 runs before Aaden Owen claimed the wicket of Harricharan.
Tariq Richards and Roberts put up a fight, with a 41-run partnership. Richards top-scored 47 runs from 82 deliveries for the North team, hitting one maximum and four other boundaries.
Unfortunately, wickets continued to drop for the North side, falling short to 120 all out in 37.4 overs. Ganesh Gobin picked up two wickets for four runs, including a maiden over in his short two overs.
T&T South Classic reigned victorious by 112 runs, collecting the prize as the first-placed team. The ‘Player of the Match’ and the ‘Best Bowler’ award went to Bachu for his excellent bowling figures. Tariq Richard received a trophy for the best batsman award, scoring 47 from 83 deliveries. Meanwhile, North Zone was named the second-placed team.
