Kale Dalla Costa's quest for the title in the Boys' Under-18 Division Singles competition in the Trinity Cup International Tennis Federation (ITF) Junior Tournament was ended by Brazilian Bernardo Tedesco at the National Racquet Centre, Orange Grove Road, Tacarigua, Wednesday.
This was after Tedesco defeated Dalla Costa, the first junior men’s player to be seeded number one for an ITF Junior Tournament, and a semifinalist in the Sunshine Snacks Tranquility Tennis Open, recently 2-6, 6-4, 7-5 in their quarterfinal and will next face Aidan Lam Meng Bart of the USA, who beat Achilleas Markis of Cyprus 6-4, 4-6, 6-3 in their quarterfinal.
The other semifinal will feature, top-ranked Oliver-Moses Gasperin of Mexico who defeated Canada's Marc-Edouard Lallier 6-4, 6-3, and USA's Gadin Arun, a 6-1, 6-3 winner over his countryman Shaun Fernando.
However, in the Doubles quarterfinals, Dalla Costa had better fortune after he teamed up with countryman Zachary Byng to beat second-ranked Tedesco and Gianluca Galasso of USA 6-1, 6-7(5),10-7 in their quarterfinal and will meet the winners of last night's quarterfinal between Aidan Lam Meng Bart of USA and his brother Andre-Lam Jun Bart of Hong Kong and USA's Shaun Fernando and Yared Alfred of the US Virgin Islands.
On Tuesday night, Byng and Dalla Costa beat Paulo Gonzalez of Colombia and Great Britain's Levi Taylor 6-3, 5-7, 12-10 in the round-of-16 while Barbadian brothers Luca Davis and Tyler Davis stopped locals Connor Carrington and Jayden Mitchell 6-0, 6-2; Alfred and Fernando ousted St Lucian Alhil Cyril and local player Nirav Dougdeen 6-0, 6-1 while Colter Amey of the USA and Lallier dumped another local duo, Javed Dowlat and Jovan Garibana 6-0, 6-1.
Also yesterday, T&T's Madison Khan and Shiloh Walker were swept aside by Canadians Isabella Bawa and Anvika Saraswathi 3-6, 2-6 in their quarterfinal in the Girls' U-18 Doubles, while on Tuesday night, T&T’s Em-Myriam Campbell-Smith and Estefania Vivas of Colombia were beaten by Elly-Rose Hudebine of France and Charlotte Tait of Australia 2-6, 3-6 in the round-of-16.
Earlier in the day, Campbell-Smith, ranked sixth was beaten in her tournament opener 6-0, 6-2 by Canada’s Alyssa Beltei after being handed an opening round bye on Monday.
Today, matches resume from 9 am with boys’ and girls’ quarterfinals as well as doubles quarterfinals.
