France-based Chloe Fraser of Smalta Crusaders repeated as the winner of the women’s Open after she ended the T&T Table Tennis Association Super Singles Top Five’ round-robin finals with an unblemished 4-0 record at the National Racquet Centre, Tacarigua on Wednesday.
The top T&T women’s player had wins over Imani Edwards-Taylor of Queen’s Park Cricket Club 12-10, 11-6, 11-5; Tunapuna Hindu Schools’ Linda Partap-Boodhan 11-4, 11-5, 11-7; Carenage Blasters’ Elizabeth Rajah 11-1, 11-1, 11-3 and Cuban Rosalba Aguiar 8-11, 11-6, 11-9, 3-11, 11-9 in a virtual title match.
Aguiar secured the runner-up spot with wins in her other matches, which included an 11-2, 11-5, 10-12, 11-6 defeat of Edwards-Taylor; 11-3, 11-7, 11-1 against Rajah and a walkover against Partap-Boodhan.
Edwards-Taylor took the bronze spot after beating Partap-Boodhan 11-8, 12-10, 12-10 and Rajah 11-4, 11-7, 11-5 while Partap-Boodhan downed Rajah 11-3, 13-11, 11-7 to avoid the wooden spoon.
On Tuesday in the main draw knockout, Fraser dominated Arlene Joseph 11-1, 11-3, 11-2 in their last-ten encounter while Edwards-Taylor, winner of the Classified Open, Silver Bowl and Tobago Open title this season overcame Guyana’s Thuraia Thomas 12-10, 11-3, 11-8; Partap-Boodhan edge past Nakeisha Lewis 11-9, 11-6, 11-9; Rajah ousted Tunapuna Hindu Schools’ Lyllana Boodhan 11-3, 11-9, 11-7 and Aguiar made light work of QPCC’s Jordan Thong 11-6, 11-3, 11-2.
Guyana’s Britton storms to men’s Open triumph
Shemar Britton was crowned the new men’s champion when he topped the six-player round-robin series with an impressive 5-0 win-loss record.
Guyana’s Britton who dispatched last year’s winner Aaron Wilson of Carenage Blasters in the round-of-12 on Tuesday night followed up that win by earning victories over QPCC’s Yuvraaj Dookram 11-2, 11-7, 11-8; Blasters’ Luc O’Young 11-9, 8-11, 11-4, 11-1; QPCC’s Derron Douglas 11-13, 11-5, 11-7, 11-8; D’Abadie Youths’ Everton Sorzano 11-5, 11-9, 11-7 and WASA’s Curtis Humphreys by walkover for his third lien on the title.
USA-based Douglas emerged as the runner-up when he won his four other matches, courtesy of an 11-6, 11-9, 8-11, 11-9 defeat of Dookram; walkover against Humphreys; 11-5, 11-6, 11-8 over O’Young and 12-10, 11-9, 11-9 against Sorzano.
Dookram shrugged off his losses to Britton and Douglas to beat Humphreys 11-5, 11-8, 11-5; O’Young 11-7, 11-8, 11-5 and Sorzano 11-5, 11-9, 12-10 for a 3-2 record and the third spot.
O’Young finished in the fourth spot after wins against Humphreys 11-4, 11-5, 11-6 and Sorzano 11-9, 11-8, 17-15 while Humphreys defeated Sorzano 11-5, 13-11, 13-11 to avoid the sixth and final spot.
On Tuesday night, playing for a spot in the final-six round-robin series, Britton cruised to an 11-2, 12-10, 11-4 win over Wilson after he had earlier defeated Rod Singh of Powergen 11-8, 11-1, 11-3 and France-based national Under-19 champion Malik Gopaul 12-14, 15-13, 11-8, 11-5 in the first two rounds of the main draw to secure his spot in last night’s ‘Top Six’ alongside Sorzano, Dookram, Humphreys, O’Young, and Douglas.
Sorzano of D’Abadie Youths overcame Musaahib Newaj of Servivors 11-8, 8-11, 11-4, 11-8; Powergen’s Anson Lowkie 10-12, 11-9, 11-7, 11-1 and Nikoli Barbour-Alexis 11-6, 10-12, 11-5, 8-11, 11-5.
Dookram, the tournament winner in 2017 eased past Dave Ramoutar 11-2, 11-2, 11-6; Abbai Lal 11-6, 11-3, 11-6 and Guyana’s Elishaba Johnson 11-3, 11-4, 7-11, 11-5
WASA’s Humphreys swept past Shahjahan Khan 11-5, 11-4, 11-5; Guyana’s Malachi Moore 11-5, 11-7, 11-6 and Matthew Mootra 11-9, 11-3, 11-8 to reach the last six.
Carenage Blasters’ Luc O’Young humbled Emmanuel Chuniesingh 11-6, 11-7, 11-5; Isa Mohammed 11-9, 12-10, 9-11, 11-7 and Jean-Marc Lee Fai 9-11, 11-9, 11-9, 11-7 while Douglas of Queen’s Park Cricket Club defeated Sharaz Ali 11-7, 11-12, 12-10; Guyana’s Colin Wong 17-15, 3-11, 11-6, 10-12, 13-11 and Josiah Joseph 12-10, 9-11, 11-8, 8-11, 12-10.
