Kerlon Henry and Nashequa Samuel nabbed multiple gold medals in the Under-13 category to help Rss Phoenix take top honours at the National Gas Company (NGC) Republic Bank Limited National Association of Athletics Administrations of T&T (NAAATT) National Juvenile Championships at the Hasely Crawford Stadium in Mucurapo, Port-of-Spain, over the weekend (August 26-27).
Their efforts saw Rss Phoenix earn an unreachable 561 points to finish ahead of second-placed Burnley with 283 and Cougars, who took third spot with 282.5. Mason Hall Police Youth Club (PYC) with 201 points and Abilene Wildcats (139) completed the top five spots.
Kerlon Henry dominated the boys' U-13 category winning seven medals - five gold and two silver. He topped the 800m with a time of three minutes and 22.87 seconds respectively ahead of Seth Sylvester (Cougars) with 2:35.89 and Seth Mangroo (Abilene) with 2:40.01. The 11-year-old won the 1,000m ahead of second-placed Alpha's Emmanuel Rivers (3:28.80) and third-placed Abilene's Ashton Torres (3:32.61)
In the 80m hurdles, the Rss Phoenix runner won 14.36 in front of silver medallist Cadon Thomas (Cougars) with 14.39 and bronze medallist Seth Sylvester (Cougars) with 14.51 and in the 300m hurdles, Henry (47.92) finished in front of Mason Hall's Malachai Mc Eachnie (50.11) and Cougars' Seth Sylvester 50.13. His other individual gold medal came in th long jump with 4.51m, edging out silver medallist Isaiah Lutchman (Neon Wolves) with 4.45m and Jonathan Huggins of Fullfilling Athletics Dreams (FAD) with 4.36m.
His two silver medals came as part of the Rss Phoenix relay teams. In the Boys 1,000m Sprint Medley (1x2x3x4), Henry, Nickel Dixon, CJ Toppin and Taijuan Dick with a 2:34.94-timing placed them second behind winner Burnley (Tyrique Best, Kaiden Simmons, Rashaun Joseph, Kaden Brathwaite Adams) with 2:32.70 and ahead of Cougars (Amaziah Marshall, Makai Johnson, Cadon Thomas, Seth Sylvester) with 2:42.26.
It was the same placing among the clubs in the mixed U-13 4x100m relay Burnley team of Adams, Jael Peters, Reneice Smith and Tyrique Best won with 52.26, followed by Rss Phoenix (Samuel, Kerlon Henry, Gloria Henry, Taijuan Dick) with 53.59 in second and Cougars (Brittney Morgan, Nyla Kerr, Seth Sylvester, Cadon Thomas) with 54.48 in third.
Samuel, who matched Henry's (Kerlon) number of medals, seven, winning four gold medals and three silver, collected another relay medal, combining with Etana Stewart, Kenya Muir, and Gloria Henry to cross first with a time of 2:40.16 in the girls 1,000m sprint medley (1x2x3x4) respectively ahead of Burnley (Jaylena Mohammed, Janae Stoute, Jael Peters, Reneice Smith) with 2:42.93 and Mercury (Ashley Martin, Rayneisha James, Ryanna Regis, Rickesha Ramsingh) with 2:49.12
Samuel also nabbed gold in the 400m with 1:04.67 with silver going to Burnley's Smith (1:04.71) and bronze to her clubmate Stewart (1:10.65). She topped the 800m with 2:44.36 in front of Burnley's Reneice Smith (2:45.30) and One A Week's (OAW) Aaliyah Griffith (2:53.62). The Rss Phoenix athlete then dominated the 1,000m with 3:41.30 followed by Rss clubmate Kenya Muir (3:44.50) and Mason Hall's Jahlissa Samuel (3:50.20).
She copped silver medals in the 300m hurdles and the long jump events.
Cougars' Nyla Kerr hurdled to gold with 52.20 ahead of Samuel (56.34) and Shannon Cox of Mason Hall with 57.64 and in the other was second to IG Fastlane's J'Lenne Roberts (4.01m) with 3.70m and in third place was St Catherine's Amaya Williams with 3.62m.
