For the second time this season, the Lone Star Conference named T&T senior women's team Asha James of West Texas A&M its women's football "Offensive Player of the Week". James led the Lady Buffs to a 1-0-1 week to improve to 8-1-1 on the season.
The Canaan, Tobago-born 22-year-old James was instrumental in the Lady Buffs' 3-2 win over UT Tyler on Saturday as WT improved to 8-1-1 on the season, placing two of her three shots on goal, including her game-tying strike off a corner kick in the 58th minute. The Trinidadian midfielder found Maliyah Mendoza in the 66th minute to provide the game-winner on another set piece from the corner.
James' 21 points in 10 matches rank second for the Lady Buffs this season, sitting behind Maria-Frances Serrant's 26.
On Saturday last at their home field in Canyon, Texas, the tenth-ranked Lady Buffs of West Texas A&M used a pair of second half goals to defeat the UT Tyler Patriots 3-2 to improve to 2-1-1 in the Lone Star Conference (LSC) while UT Tyler fell to 6-2-2 overall, and 1-2-2 in the LSC.
The Patriots came out of swinging in the first half registering the game's first free kick in the fourth minute. On that kick, Jordan Colbert snuck the ball through the crowded 18-yard box and past Reagan Heelan for a 1-0 lead.
However, the Lady Buffs wasted no time in levelling the score with Maliyah Mendoza finding T&T senior women's team striker Maria-Frances Serrant on a cross into the centre of the box, her 12th goal in ten matches.
In the second half, UT Tyler struck first again in the 54th minute, when an initial shot by Sydnee Garner got blocked by a WT defender with Faith Adje scoring the follow-up attempt.
The Lady Buffs responded quickly once more off a corner kick as James sent in a ball towards her near post where it bounced off a Patriots' defender and into the back of the net. The deciding goal came off the foot of Mendoza with 24 minutes remaining, as James' sent a pass into the box off a corner kick, the ball went untouched and dropped to the feet of Mendoza on the back post for an easy finish.
The Lady Buffs return to action with a home contest against No 24 Angelo State.
