Nirav Dougdeen and Madison Khan walked away with the girls' and boys' Under-18 singles titles on Thursday when action in the RBC Junior Tennis Tournament continued at the National Racquet Centre in Orange Grove, Tacarigua.
Both faced the top-ranked player in their respective division and prevailed comfortably.
Dougdeen shocked an in-formed Jayden Mitchell in two sets, first racing out to a first-set 6-0 triumph that shook the unbeaten Mitchell into reality on court 6. Mitchell gave a much better effort in the second set but Dougdeen was already in full-flight and sealed the win with a 7-6 margin for the silverware.
In the girls' equivalent, Khan prevailed on an identical 6-4 margin to ensure she lifted the title on court five.
As it was on previous days, rain caused a minor delay in the proceedings, but it could not stop Makeda Bain from preventing Khan from securing her second title on the day.
Khan, the third seed, contested the final of the girls' U-16 singles, but Bain, a triple-crown winner at the RBC tourney on the sister isle of Tobago last year, disposed of her in straight sets 6-4, 6-4.
The boys' final was almost similar, as Josiah Hills, one of three players to win triple crowns at the RBC tourney at Shaw Park in 2023, cruised to a 6-4 triumph to take the advantage in the first set against Dougdeen who was on his way to getting his second title.
However, with Hills leading 1-0, he held off his opponent in a close contest 7-6 for the crown.
Meanwhile, in the girls' U-14s, Cyra Ramcharan made light work out of her sister Suri Ramcharan in the final, prevailing 6-2, 6-2, while Christopher Khan held off Guyana's Nathan De Nobrega for the U-14 boys crown, 7-6, 6-3.
