Moka Boissiere Strikers (MB2 Strikers) are the champions of the Diego Martin Borough Corporation ‘Champions of the Borough Cup’ football competition, which concluded at the Carenage Recreation Ground on Haig Street, Carenage on Thursday.
MB2 Strikers met Petit Valley/Cocorite in the final and emerged with a 2-0 win.
Captain and centre-back of the Strikers, Rahim Jarvis, said after the match that, “The tournament brought his community (Moka/Boissiere) together and allowed the players to showcase their talents.”
Strikers got its opening goal from Keeron Benito, followed by a penalty to seal the honours to spur the team into celebration for the team, which proved to be an inspiration for their fans and the community. The captain added that the performance reflects the importance of persistence, discipline, and collaboration in achieving goals, and to be champions of the inaugural Borough Cup is an honour, and the MB2 Strikers have set a high standard for future teams.
Strikers pocketed the winning prize of $50,000, while the runners-up, Petit Valley/Cocorite, collected $20,000, and Carenage Sharks got $15,000 for coming out on top 2-0 against Bagatelle/Blue Basin Lions in the third-place playoff.
Following the final night of competition, Her Worship The Mayor of the Borough, Akeiliah Glasgow-Warner, expressed her heartfelt thanks to everyone who made the Champions of the Borough Cup a resounding success on its initial staging.
The mayor also applauded the fans from the 10 districts that participated—Petit Valley/Cocorite, Moka/Boissiere, Bagatelle/Blue Basin, Morne Coco/Alyce Glen, Chaguaramas/Pt Cumana, Diamond Vale, Glencoe/Goodwood/La Puerta, St Lucien/Cameron Hill, Covigne/Richplain, and Belle Vue/Boissiere—for their unwavering support and enthusiasm, which brought unmatched energy to every match, creating an atmosphere of unity and passion from when the tournament started on October 18 to the night of the final.
The mayor also praised the Sport Youth Development & Education Committee and administration of the borough that coordinated the smooth running of the event, together with CEPEP for their efforts in maintaining the grounds at Carenage and Maraval, which provided the players with a good playing surface to display their skills during the tournaments.
