Diego Martin Government School secured its first Trinidad title when it defeated Palo Seco Government 2-0 to register their lien on the Championship Trophy when the Girl Under-15 final in the National Primary Schools Football League was contested in the second match of a triple-header at Fatima Grounds, Port-of-Spain, Tuesday morning.
Earlier, Arima Boys RC scored a huge 7-0 win over the International School of Port-of-Spain (ISPS) in the U-12 Boys title match and later Carapichaima RC edged Santa Cruz RC, 1-0 in the U-15 Boys finale.
Some 800 persons came out to support their teams at the Championship and the win for Diego Martin came as no surprise. The unbeaten Diego Martin Government team played well and had the better of the exchanges in the early part of the match. However, when Anna Marie Christian placed a good right-footer home Diego Martin supporters went into a frenzy. When referee Jerome Walter blew his whistle signalling the end of the first half, Diego Martin was in a good position, up 1-0.
On the resumption, Palo Seco pressed as Etana Bridgewater and Nyola Austin tried to put their team on the scoresheet. However, Christian sealed the win for Diego Martin after getting a good pass from Reniya Pemberton and she finished with aplomb. Two minutes later, Diego Martin was champion of Trinidad and coach Shem Barrow was a proud coach thereafter.
The second match was worth waiting to see after Arima Boys RC failed to arrive on time for the game. They must thank ISPS for not requesting a forfeit from the match, so late was the new U-15 boys’ champion team.
However, once referee Jerome Walter blew his whistle to start the game it was a different story as the level played by both teams was high.
Arima had the first laugh when Kaydan Jamerson scored the opener with a well-taken free kick from 25 metres out. ISPS kept coming back with Jose Soliman but he could not get the ball into the back of the net.
Unlike topscorer Antwon Munroe, who was on target five times. His first saw him dribble and finish beautifully from 15 metres out for the Arima Boys’ second item sending their 200 supporters singing and dancing as ISPS looked in a spot of bother.
Monroe registered his second in the 15th minute to make it 3-0 at the half. On the resumption, it was all Arima Boys RC again celebrating as Munroe added his third and the team’s fourth before Jamerson had another making it 5-0 to the former U-15 champion.
ISPS fought back doggedly and forced the goalkeeper to bring off two good saves but then Monroe struck again and again to put the issue beyond doubt, 7-0. Arima Boys RC won the Trinidad leg of the National Championship for the first time.
The Arima team did well and the support of the Minister of Planning and Development, Penelope Beckles paid dividends.
The last match of the day saw Carapichaima RC sneak past the Eastern Giants Santa Cruz RC, 1-0. Carapichaima RC got its goal from Chase Simon and it was a well-taken goal. He took on the centre-back and evaded him before sending a powerful right-footer into the back of the nets.
Santa Cruz RC could consider themselves unfortunate after missing two penalty kicks during the game. They missed one in the ninth minute and then with two minutes left a second. But credit must be given to the Carapichiama RC who fought doggedly to the end.
All Trinidad winners will meet their Tobago counterparts on December 3 at the Arima Velodrome.
