A 51-year-old grandfather and his son-in-law were shot to death on Saturday night on Temple Street in Gonzales, Belmont. Devanand "Uncle Dave" Rajcoomar, a former checker of San Juan/Laventille Regional Corporation, and Joel "Snake Eyes" Phillip, 34, an employee of the Unemployment Relief Programme, died on the spot.

A report said Rajcoomar, Phillip and friends were liming at the back of a relative's house around 11.10 pm, when they were approached by four gunmen, who opened fire on the group. Both men were struck about their bodies while their friends scampered for safety. Rajcoomar and Phillip fell down a hill and landed on the side of the family's house.

Relatives complained yesterday that members of the Emergency Health Service never responded to their call. Sandra said she did not know why anyone would want to kill her husband. "He was the breadwinner of the family. I never worked, and he took care of everything. He was no gangster, and never had a problem with people.

Officers of the Special Anti-Crime Unit visited the area to photograph the crime scene. However, detectives said Phillip was the main suspect in the murder of PNM councillor, Bert Allette, who was shot dead while walking on St Francois Valley Road in Belmont, on December 26, 2006.
