Given the western mindset for instant results and gratification author and holistic health practitioner Rex Lassalle says lifestyle diseases or chronic diseases such as cancer, heart attacks, strokes, diabetes, hypertension and obesity can be treated with Eastern medical practices such as Japanese shiatsu, Chinese five elements theory, and Ayurvedic marma points. However, he said, they are no quick fix and entails lifestyle changes.

He said children with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and autism can also be treated using alternative medicine.

Lassalle, a qualified osteopath who pioneered the development of shiatsu massage in Britain, lectures internationally on traditional Eastern practices and related disciplines. For almost 40 years, he has worked with thousands of individuals using a variety of bodywork, nutritional, herbal and holistic techniques.

He will be in Trinidad for a two-day workshop on November 12-13 at The Teaching and Learning Center, The University of the West Indies (UWI), St Augustine. He has distilled his almost 40 years of knowledge garnered from working with thousands of individuals using a variety of bodywork, nutritional, herbal and holistic techniques into his recent book, The Time Of Your Life: Could It Be Now? which will be featured at the event.

Lassalle will be sharing knowledge from his book on topics such as the significance of number sign, and people will be amazed at what he can "read" about them from just their birth date.

He will also teach people what they can do when things go wrong with their system, how to create a balanced, stress-free environment within themselves, their home and at work using the simple nine Star Ki principles, getting a whole new practical insight about their children and how to support them at school and at home.

Speaking to the Sunday Guardian via Skype from Finland, where he currently resides, Lassalle said "It's never a quick fix, a human baby takes nine months to be born, there are many holistic approaches to health and wellbeing.

"Regarding ADHD and autism in children, quite a lot also comes from the time of pregnancy or imprint.

"If you have a lot of digital devices as part of your lifestyle which we all do, but have no boundaries with such as sleeping with them in close proximity 24/7.

"Cellphones constantly on, television, computers all around you, these types of imprints have an influence and impact upon the nervous system of children." He said a child in the womb was also affected by the quality of food the mother ate, all these factors played a part in his or her development.

Lassalle said marma points made a big difference in treating children with ADHD, children had different patterns, some were more kinesthetic, how to deal with them had to do more with touch, while some children were more dynamic and needed to move and play more.

According to Lassalle, veteran pan arranger and composer Len "Boogsie" Sharpe will be the featured guest at his workshop on November 13 where he will be interviewed to reference the pattern and harmony of his creative process.

He said Sharpe had a very similar pattern to famous musicians such as American jazz pianist and composer, Thelonius Monk, American jazz pianist Bud Powell and Mexican-American award-winning guitarist Carlos Santana.

Lassalle, who also does personal coaching, said he will be showing people how they can tap into this "flow" or what he calls people's time DNA imprint, just like many famous musicians and athletes and apply the same principles to their own lives, health and creativity, and especially with their children.
