A police officer has been placed on $75,000 bail after he appeared before a Port-of-Spain magistrate charged with misbehaviour in public office.
PC Neil Toolaram, 39, of #8 Boodram Street, Enterprise, Chaguanas, was arrested last Friday around 2 pm while on duty at the Besson Street Police Station by officers of the Professional Standards Bureau.
It is alleged that Toolaram accepted $3000,00 cash from a woman to secure bail for her husband who was charged for driving under the influence of alcohol.
A party of officers led by Senior Supt Totaram Dookhie and including Insp Hill, Cpl Lawrence Joefield, Sgt Brittan Lawrence and Cpl Paul Mohammed conducted enquiries after the woman lodged a report.
On Friday, the woman pointed out Toolaram. Following investigations, Director of Public Prosecutions Roger Gaspard SC gave instructions for the officer to be charged.
Ag WP Cpl Natalie Carty laid the charge.
Toolaram appeared before Magistrate Gomez yesterday and was not called upon to plead. Magistrate Marissa Gomez granted bail in the sum of $75,000. The matter was adjourned to January 7.
