A two-year-old child is warded at the San Fernando General Hospital after ingesting a poisonous substance at her home in Point Fortin.
The incident occurred on Boxing Day but was only reported on January 3 as her mother told police she was in the hospital with the child.
Investigators said she left the baby in the care of her 64-year-old grandfather at their home at Bryant Street, Strikers Villas, New Village home and went to work around 8 am.
When she returned home at around 2:15 pm she saw her daughter pointing to her mouth, which appeared dark in colour. She immediately took her daughter to the Point Fortin Hospital.
The child was later transferred to the San Fernando General Hospital, where she was admitted to the Intensive Care Unit in stable condition. Medical personnel confirmed that the child had ingested an unknown poisonous substance.
On Friday she was released from the ICU and warded at the Pediatric Unit. The Child Protection Unit and the Children’s Authority have been informed and are now investigating.
