Police officers assigned to the Sangre Grande Community Oriented Policing section took time off yesterday to undertake a clean-up project at a popular liming spot commonly known as The Cut Away on Manzanilla beach.
The officers included Senior Supt Khan, head of the Eastern Division, WP Corporal Lezama and constables Persad, Ali and Phillip. Police officers were joined by members of Sangre Grande Police Youth Club, Teen Challenge, Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints and the community.
Officers said The Cut Away has become an eyesore with the amount of garbage left by sea bathers, so the officers decided to do a beautification project.
PC Ali said the duty of police is not only to protect and serve citizens but also to ensure the environment is safe and clean.
The officers promised to place signage at the popular spot along Manzanilla beach urging sea bathers and visitors to keep the area clean and to remove their garbage.
“These people seem not to be environmentally friendly. They will come to the beach, have a good time and leave the place polluted with garbage. This practice must stop immediately, all should be proud of the environment,” Snr Supt Khan said.
Officers also reminded the public that the turtles which frequent the shore at this point are prevented from nesting because of the garbage.
