Chutney Soca Monarch finalist Nisha Ramsook, a firefighter in the T&T Fire Service, is gearing up to showcase her “lion strength” with her song “Lion on Stage,”
In 2021, Ramsook won the Queen Of Chutney Soca event but COVID-19 affected her musical career as most of her bookings had to be cancelled.
“I thank God that none of my immediate family members have died from this virus. But I have lost some of my close friends due to COVID. May there souls RIP,” Ramsook told Guardian Media.
Ramsook, 33, of Bamboo Settlement, Valsayn, is a songwriter/vocalist and at the age of 14 grew a passion for singing.
“From since at a young age, I would attend various shows and competitions with my dad and grandfather. The very popular singer Omardath Maraj, aka Mr Balkissoon, gave me a chance to perform with his band Spreadpal Crew for the very first time. From there, I started to climb a ladder,” Ramsook revealed.
On her song for this year, which is very energetic, Ramsook said she wrote it intending to express how powerful her vocals can be.
“So instead of saying I am a lioness, I replaced it with Like a lion on stage... I am basically singing about my strength, it’s the same as the lion. I am very excited that Artical Don, also known as the Raja King, has remixed and collaborated with me on this track, for he is the lion!!! Artical Don wrote the lyrics that he sang on the track and I wrote the rest. This song was recorded and produced at Maha Productions.”
This is Ramsook’s third year in the finals of Chutney Soca Monarch.
“I have been trying for the past 17 years and this being my third year and I am very happy and thankful to be here. Everyone knows me for my very popular track called Roast up D Corn.”
Ramsook is hopeful that soon she’ll get a chance to tour.
“No tours as yet but with God by my side success will happen for me. Honestly, I will love to tour the world,” she said.
“In the next four to five years I see myself as a much better and successful songwriter/vocalist. I want to be able to steal the hearts of many on my musical journey,” she added.
Being a firefighter, Ramsook is not stopping there in terms of career advancement.
“There is one thing that I always wanted to do, attend culinary school. With the grace of God, I will be attending.”
Ramsook wishes all her fellow artistes who made it along with her to the CSM Finals the “best of luck... love and respect to all.”
Ramsook also urged all young women to “never give up because great things take time.”
