The Gran Couva Main Road suffered a major collapse on Monday.

The road started falling apart on Saturday when it dropped as much as three feet in some areas. The heavy rains over the weekend compounded the problem and the road dropped further on Monday.

Residents said it was sometime before noon that the road fell, making it totally impassable even for pedestrian traffic.

Motorists taking a detour along the narrow Cameron Road said the land is also starting to slip on that stretch of roadway.

The 100-plus residents of Pepper Villager and La Vega Village to the east of the landslide said they are now cut off and will have to make a detour through Brasso, which is also plagued with flooding and landslides.

Caroni Central MP Arnold Ram said another landslide at Batchasingh Street and the Gran Couva Main Road had also worsened. He said a report was sent to the Ministry of Works, the body responsible for the roads.

Ram said a WASA main in the La Vega area also gave way.

He said Central is suffering from geographical neglect, with the Government placing emphasis on disasters in northern Trinidad.
