Weeks after she reportedly refused to resign as president of the UWI Student Guild, Kirby Moses was recalled and the position was declared vacant.

A source from the UWI Guild confirmed that at a special general meeting last Friday, a petition with 229 signatures was presented.

The results of a vote held among the 323 students in attendance showed that 83 per cent voted to recall Moses’ appointment. The decision was supported by the UWI campus administration.

Moses did not respond to calls for comment up to late yesterday.

In an August 9 notice, the UWI Guild reported that a motion of no confidence was filed against Moses, after she allegedly ignored calls to hold a by-election for the position of Guild treasurer.

Moses reportedly appointed her brother, Kemp Moses as the Guild’s treasurer, following the resignation of Liam Mohammed, earlier this year. Although she lost the vote of no confidence, Moses refused to resign.

In an interview with Guardian Media, however, Moses questioned the legitimacy of the motion and claimed it involved non-members.

Responding to calls for an audit into the Guild’s accounts, she said, “As it relates to the state of the Guild, we are in desperate need of auditing in that place: audit of the guild administrative office, audit of the Guild of Students, audit of the administration of the University of the West Indies, especially those who deal with the portfolio of the Guild of Students.”

Kemp Moses dismissed claims of nepotism and said his sister played no role in his appointment as treasurer.

“When there’s a resignation, there’s a process to fill vacancies and in the process, you can do a by-election or you can appoint. Our appointment process is appointment by interview,” he said.

“Four people were interviewed, and they chose me... She did not choose me, so I don’t see how there is any conflict of interest if she had no voting powers when I was chosen.”
