The North Coast Road reopened to single vehicular lane traffic yesterday after a landslide forced the closure of the major roadway hours before.
On Saturday night, after heavy rains, a landslip occurred blocking off the road and isolating villagers and beachgoers from the rest of the country.
The incident took place approximately 1.5 kilometres before the popular Maracas lookout.
The road is vital for reaching popular beaches along the coast and is no stranger to landslips.
According to officials at the Ministry of Works and Transport, the incident happened just after 7 pm.
It said crews from the ministry were promptly deployed to clear the debris and establish interim connectivity while ongoing assessments were being conducted.
The cleanup exercise extended well into the early hours of the morning.
In its most recent release yesterday, the Ministry of Works and Transport informed the general public that connectivity had been restored on the North Coast Road, but only for single-lane traffic.
The ministry also advised commuters and residents to proceed with caution along the roadway, consider alternative routes, or avoid the area if possible.
Guardian Media visited the North Coast Road which was cordoned off by officials, however, commuters were still passing through the area.
Officials are expected to revisit the site as they continue to assess the hillside from which the landslip emanated.
