Gov­ern­ment Sen­a­tor Lau­rel Leza­ma-Lee Sing says she is “not ca­pa­ble of such hor­ren­dous acts” as she waits for her day in court af­ter an In­ter­im Pro­tec­tion Or­der was grant­ed against her.

In a pre-ac­tion pro­to­col let­ter to a so­cial me­dia blog­ger yes­ter­day, Leza­ma-Lee Sing, through her at­tor­neys, de­fend­ed her char­ac­ter af­ter posts ac­com­pa­nied by neg­a­tive com­ments were made about her on so­cial me­dia in re­la­tion to the pro­tec­tion or­der.

“Our client, states cat­e­gor­i­cal­ly and em­phat­i­cal­ly that she is not ca­pa­ble of such a hor­ren­dous act...More­over, this In­ter­im Pro­tec­tion Or­der dat­ed the 19th day of Sep­tem­ber 2024, was made ex parte and our client is await­ing her op­por­tu­ni­ty to be heard by the said court,” the let­ter stat­ed.

It added, “Our client is a well-known, re­spect­ed and ed­u­cat­ed Politi­cian and Sen­a­tor of the Gov­ern­ment of Trinidad and To­ba­go. In her spare time, she is ac­tive­ly in­volved in a num­ber of vol­un­tary or­gan­i­sa­tions which fo­cus on the de­vel­op­ment of girls and women.”

Leza­ma-Lee Sing is be­ing rep­re­sent­ed by Al­isha Pon­am­bal­am and Hove and As­so­ciates.

When con­tact­ed yes­ter­day, Leza­ma-Lee Sing’s hus­band Daren Lee Sing of­fered no com­ment on the mat­ter and the court doc­u­ment which was cir­cu­lat­ing on so­cial me­dia.

It said the Or­der is with ef­fect from Sep­tem­ber 19 and will con­tin­ue un­til it is re­voked, with­drawn, dis­missed or a fi­nal or­der is made.

Leza­ma-Lee Sing, who is al­so the Peo­ple’s Na­tion­al Move­ment’s ed­u­ca­tion of­fi­cer, did not ap­pear in the mat­ter nor was she rep­re­sent­ed by an at­tor­ney.

Sev­er­al ef­forts to con­tact her proved fu­tile.

Leza­ma-Lee Sing was the youngest Sen­a­tor in the 9th Par­lia­ment of Trinidad and To­ba­go. She was ap­point­ed to serve as a Gov­ern­ment Sen­a­tor from 2007 to 2010.

She was re-ap­point­ed to serve as a Gov­ern­ment Sen­a­tor in the 12th Re­pub­li­can Par­lia­ment which com­menced in 2020.

Guardian Me­dia al­so reached out to Prime Min­is­ter Dr Kei­th Row­ley, PNM’s Chair­man Stu­art Young, par­ty PRO Faris Al-Rawi, Gen­er­al Sec­re­tary Fos­ter Cum­mings and head of the PNM Women’s League Camille Robin­son-Reg­is for com­ment on the mat­ter but re­ceived no re­sponse up to late yes­ter­day evening.

Daren Lee Sing is cur­rent­ly the act­ing Chief Ex­ec­u­tive Of­fi­cer at the Trinidad and To­ba­go Coali­tion of Ser­vices In­dus­tries and a for­mer TTP­BA (Trinidad and To­ba­go Pub­lish­ers and Broad­cast­er As­so­ci­a­tion pres­i­dent.

He is al­so the son of for­mer Port-of-Spain May­or Louis Lee Sing.
