Trinidad Generation Unlimited (TGU) has confirmed that a “brief disruption to gas supply” was behind the power outages experienced by much of the country on Wednesday.

“Trinidad Generation Unlimited (TGU) wishes to inform all its stakeholders that during NGC works on 22nd December 2021, there was a brief disruption to gas supply.  This triggered a loss of power generation as reported,” the company explained in a news statement issued this morning.

The company said it was able to have the matter resolved fairly quickly with some help from the National Gas Company (NGC):

“Notwithstanding, working in conjunction with NGC, the natural gas supply to TGU was efficiently restored and the disruption was resolved.  TGU was subsequently able to generate electricity to the national grid in the shortest possible timeframe.”

Several parts of Trinidad lost electricity service just before midday on Wednesday, from Penal in the south to Port of Spain in the north, and Sangre Grande in the east.

The Trinidad and Tobago Electricity Commission (T&TEC) currently is awaiting a report from an independent power provider about yesterday’s mid-morning power outage, as it seeks to determine exactly why it occurred.
