The eight-seeded Kale Dalla Costa, second-ranked Jordane Dookie, and unranked Lilly Mohammed moved into the quarterfinals of their respective Boys and Girls Under-18 Singles competition in the J30 International Tennis Federation (ITF) World Tennis Tour Tournament at the National Racket Centre, Orange Grove Road, Tacarigua, on Tuesday.
In the boys’ main draw, Dalla Coast trounced Jaylon Chapman in an all-T&T encounter round-of-16 matchup without dropping a game, 6-0, 6-0 to set up a quarterfinal duel with the fourth-ranked USA’s Easton Horricks, who won by a similar 6-0, 6-0 margin over T&T’s Deron Dumas.
However, the three other T&T players who reached the last-16, Sebastien Byng, Beckham Sylvester, and Luca Denoon were also defeated in their respective second-round matches.
The fifth-ranked Byng was outlasted by Chile’s Yong Chao He Wang 6-3, 6-7(3), 7-5 while Sylvester went under to third-seeded Juan Carlos Portilla Morales 1-6, 3-6, and Denoon fell to seventh-ranked Daniel Azar of Jamaica, 6-7(7), 6-2, 6-3.
In the girls’ category, Dookie, coming off a third Doubles title win in four tournaments, eased past fellow T&T player Brianna Harricharan 6-2, 6-0, and will next face countrywoman Mohammed who stunned Grenada’s Arlina Drigo, seeded eighth, 6-1, 6-2 in their last-16 clash.
The other local girls in action inclusive of Charlotte Ready, Ella Carrington, Naomi Mohammed, Cameron Wong, and Shiloh Walker, were all beaten.
Ready was stopped by Spain’s Alba Maria Coromina 0-6, 1-6; Carrington was dispatched by Barbadian fourth-seeded player Serena Bryan, 2-6, 2-6; Mohammed (N) was ousted by New Zealand’s Dallas King-Ehau 1-6, 0-6; seventh-ranked Wong suffered a 6-1, 2-6, 1-6 loss to Canada’s Natalie Velits, and Walker was overwhelmed by USA’s Jessica Mc Lean 1-6, 0-6.
The Doubles round-of-16 was expected to serve off last night with a host of local players in action.
In the lone all-T&T clash, Zachary Byng and B’jorn faced Nathen Martin and Sylvester while Denoon paired with Nicholas Ready for a clash against Barbadian Aidan Clarke, and Canada’s Thomas O’Neil; Chapman brothers Jaylon and Jordell met He Wang, and Hong Kong’s Ling Fung Lionel Ng; Deron Dumas and Daniel Rahaman clashed with USA’s Anthony Abbott, and T&T’s Thomas Chung, while locals Yeshowah Campbell-Smith and Daniel Dumas were due to face Jamaican Azar and T&T’s Luca Shamsi.
