Trinidad and Tobago Red Force enters the final round of the Cricket West Indies Four-Day Championships against the Guyana Harpy Eagles starting Wednesday at the Queen’s Park Oval in St Clair, Port-of-Spain.
The Red Force entered last week’s match against Jamaica 1.6 points behind the Harpy Eagles, but a 223-run loss to the fifth-placed Jamaicans pushed them 6.2 points behind the South American nation.
Fortunately for the Red Force, Guyana themselves drew with the Leeward Islands Hurricanes, which leaves the final round match poised as a virtual final of the tournament.
The Red Force coach, Rayad Emrit, expressed the disappointment of missing the opportunity to go top of the standings ahead of the final round.
“Obviously, it’s disappointing, playing at home and losing to Jamaica,” Emrit said. “I think the guys are very disappointed. But we still have an opportunity to salvage the trophy. We always want to do well, especially playing at home. We have to do well in this game against Guyana. Hopefully, we can bounce back from this as quickly as possible.”
The former West Indies and Red Force all-rounder maintained the players are still in an upbeat mood.
“I think the mood in the camp is still very good. We try to put that behind us as quickly as possible. We don’t want to develop any negatives too much and just move forward.”
Despite the disappointing loss that pushed the Red Force 6.2 points behind the final opponents they will face from Wednesday, Emrit extracted some of the positives the team can learn from.
“The positives are the captain (Joshua Da Silva) got a really, really good finish. He continued to do well. Shannon (Gabriel) came back and bowled extremely well; he was a bit unlucky; he did not get any wickets. But I think he bowled really, really well. Joshua James bowled well. Khary, again, continued to do well. I think there are still positives.”
While Emrit did not want to dwell on the negatives, he did point out that the team’s fielding could improve.
“Our catching, in particular, could improve. If we can get those things right, I think we still have the fight in our team and the belief to do well.”
Leg spinner Yannic Cariah is injured and will be sidelined for six weeks and is replaced by Clarke Road’s Vikash Mohan.
