Former West Indies women’s player and cricket commentator Stacy Ann King helped the University of West Indies Women’s Cricket Club (UWI WCC) reign over previously unbeaten Powergen Women in the T&T Women’s Cricket Association’s (TTWCA) Premiership Division T20 League on Sunday.
The teams met at the Sir Frank Worrell ground at the University of the West Indies Sport and Physical Education Centre (UWI SPEC) in St Augustine, and the UWI WCC unit made use of home advantage, emerging with a narrow 12-run victory in the thrilling affair against the reigning 50-Over league champion.
Second-placed finisher in the 50-overs, UWI WCC, now the lone undefeated team, who sits on top of the seven-team standings with 20 points from three wins, batted first and posted 162/7 in its 20 overs. King hit a brisk half-century (52) off 37 balls and had good support from Sandamali Dolawatta and T&T senior women’s cricketer Lee Ann Kirby, who both shined with both bat and ball. Dolawatta scored 36 while Kirby added 34.
On the bowling end, veteran cricketer Anisa Mohammed led Powergen with 3-22 while Jessica Wilathgamuwa (1-24) and Kimberly John (1-36), each picked up a wicket.
In reply, Powergen, who is in second place with 17 points from two wins and a loss, batted its full 20 overs but fell short of the target, 150/6 despite getting a half-century from national cricketer Britney Cooper, who hit 57 off 42 balls. Mohammed scored 39 and Falina Jack, 17 not out but their efforts were insufficient.
Kirby (2-23) and Dolawatta (2-32) partnered to lead the bowling attack, each with two wickets. Amelia Khan was the other wicket-taker, claiming 1-18 for the winner.
Only one other match was played in the Division as the meeting between Hibiscus Ladies and Caldrac Achievers at Granville Recreation Ground in Cedros was abandoned without a ball being ball due to rain.
However, at the Esmeralda Recreation Ground in Chaguanas, Technocrats cruised to a nine-wicket win over Players Sports Club (SC).
Dianne Hassranah and national cricketer Kirbyina Alexander ran through Players SC’s batting line-up when they batted first and were bowled out for just 56 in 13.4 overs. Hassranah claimed an impressive 4-8 while Alexander was second-best with 3-16.
In the Championship Division, 30-over league champion, Sital Youngsters, are a win away from taking their second title of their debut season. The Youngsters defeated Victoria Cricket Club (CC) by 44 runs when action in the 20-over competition continued that afternoon.
Batters Crystal Hanslal and Natalie Ninah and bowler Neeta Boodhai were key for the winners. Leader Sital Youngsters batted first and reached 139/4 in their 20 overs with Hanslal topscoring with 45 and Ninah’s 43 not out. Rose Ramsigh was Victoria CC’s best bowler with 2-33.
In reply, Victoria failed to get to the required target in their 20 overs, putting up 95/8 on the scoreboard thanks to the bowling contribution of Boodhai, who secured 3-11.
In the other match in the division, Cricket Lovers, who is currently in second spot with 28 points behind Sital Youngsters (31), beat North Zone by 87 runs.
The league takes a break this Sunday and will resume on April 6 where teams will be battling for the top two spots, to compete in the final. Caldrac Achievers and Players SC are the respective defending champions in the Premiership and Championship Divisions. Last season, they were declared the winners after topping the league phase as the finals day was rained out.
