On Indian Arrival Day, it was all “John O’Brien Day” at the races.

Tuesday, the champion trainer continued his superb form when he saddled three of the six winners on the Arima Race Club’s (ARC) day six programme.

The top trainer continued his excellent performances when he saddled the unbeaten filly In The Headlines to take the feature event on the six-race card – the Ms Indeera Deokiesingh Guineas - the first leg of local racing’s ‘Triple Crown’.

O’Brien was delighted with the filly’s victory and hopes to see her continue thriving in the coming months.

He said, “It is an honour to win a classic and the manner in which In The Headlines won was impressive. She is a good filly who has improved over the past five months. She did it in style and will meet Hello World in the Midsummer. That will be a major clash.”

The top conditioner had three horses in the Guineas and with the highly-regarded unbeaten filly Firecracker having to be withdrawn at the gates, it left the room open for O’Brien to land another magical one-two-three. However, it did not happen and the 6-1 chance Theory of Colours came with a run to snatch second ahead of Blinding Lights and Angry Bird.

O’Brien who has been the champion trainer for nearly a decade and has saddled two ‘Triple Crown’ winners in Momentum and Wise Guy, showed clearly that he had not lost his touch with his three winners.

He also saddled Soca Harmony to win the undercard with the superb assistance of former champion jockey Nobel Abrego.

“Soca Harmony ran a great race. She was really well-ridden by Nobel Abrego. Yes, we put up over-weight but Abrego rode her superbly. There was never any doubt who would win once Abrego got her going. She won well and she was beating the Gold Cup winner Crown Prince and the Stewards Cup runner-up, Top of The Game,” said O’Brien, when asked about his first winner on the card.

He was back in the winner’s enclosure in the fifth event through In The Headlines who won as she pleased in the Guineas. Her win was impressive and by seven and a quarter length from rank outsider Theory of Colours and stable companion Blinding Lights.

In the final race of the day, favourite Happy Bird gave trainer O’Brien his third winner on the six-race programme. Happy Bird won impressively by 5 1/2 lengths under the leading rider for the day, Tristan Phillips.

Phillips also won the feature aboard In The Headlines in the Guineas, before doubling up with Happy Bird in the finale on day six.

O’Brien said: “My final winner was Happy Bird who was the 6-5 favourite. She broke loose at the start and returned to make everyone happy with an exciting performance. Happy Bird continues to improve and could make her mark in time to come.”

At this point, though winning three races from six, all did not go his way, it looks fruitless for anyone to think about attacking the lead of O’Brien who has shown yet again, that he is “The Boss”.

He is expected to continue winning the champion’s trainer crown in 2023.
