Jonathan Sam­bra­no splashed his way to two in­di­vid­ual medals and an­oth­er in the med­ley re­lays when the Aquat­ics Sports As­so­ci­a­tion of T&T (ASATT) In­vi­ta­tion­al Good­will Swim Meet got go­ing at the Na­tion­al Aquat­ic Cen­tre in Bal­main, Cou­va on Fri­day.

His per­for­mance summed up an over­all ex­cel­lent per­for­mance for the T&T team with lit­tle Jan­nai Ap­ple­whaite claim­ing a gold medal in his first in­ter­na­tion­al for­ay, as the T&T team bagged 41 medals, con­sist­ing of 14 in­di­vid­ual gold, nine in­di­vid­ual sil­ver and 10 in­di­vid­ual bronze medals, as well as five re­lay gold and three re­lay sil­ver.

Ap­ple­whaite shook off a bun­dle of nerves in the Boys' 13-14 100 me­tres back­stroke to lead a one-two fin­ish for team T&T in a time of 1:05.09 with Quil­lon Leera tak­ing the sil­ver in 1:05.33. Lon­ny Dun­combe of the Ba­hamas sealed the bronze medal.

That event though was sad­ly the lone event for Ap­ple­whaite, as he wait­ed with con­fi­dence ooz­ing out of the ceil­ing for an­oth­er race in the re­lays which nev­er came, as one of his col­leagues ap­peared to have picked up an in­jury.

How­ev­er, there was no hin­drance for Sam­bra­no on the day, first record­ing a con­vinc­ing win in the boys' 11-12 di­vi­sion 100 me­tres freestyle in a time of 1:00.42, ahead of his coun­try­man Aaron Colthrust (1:02.61) while Ja­maica's Howard Wal­lace (1:03.05) took the bronze.

Lat­er Sam­bra­no was at it again in the boys' 11-12 100m back­stroke, where he held off Bar­ba­di­an Hamani Cal­len­der for the gold by clock­ing 1:15.30. Cal­len­der was not too far off in sec­ond (1:15.51) with Colthrust tak­ing third (1:16.86).

Still, it was not the end for Sam­bra­no as the tal­ent­ed T&T swim­mer re­turned lat­er on to help his team which al­so in­clud­ed Colthrust, Mack­ay Burgess and his broth­er Joshua Sam­bra­no, to the gold medal in the boys' 11-12 400m med­ley re­lay in 4:53.04.

Ja­maica's team of Cameron Brown, Howard Wal­lace, Liam Har­ri­son and Ky-Mani Hen­dricks took the run­ner-up spot in 4:59.19 and Bar­ba­dos' quar­tet of Cal­len­der, Beau Wash­ing­ton, Achebe Smith and Ju­dah Hall-Fox se­cured third in 5:43.35.

Za­hara An­tho­ny, Mic­ah Alexan­der, Tay­lor Marchan and Ne­ta­nia Ed­wards were al­so among the gold medal win­ners for the red, white and black on Fri­day. An­tho­ny, a usu­al stand­out for T&T, rushed to the fin­ish in the girls 8 and un­der 100m freestyle in 1:17.54 for the top spot, hold­ing off Bar­ba­dos' Gabriel­la Babb in sec­ond (1:17.69) and Sap­phire Parks of St Lu­cia in third 1:18.25.

Alexan­der fol­lowed like­wise in the boys' 8 and un­der 100m freestyle, splash­ing to the gold medal in 1:14.23. Suri­name's Djoel Old­en­stam took the run­ner-up po­si­tion (1:16.50) and Alex Rain­ford of Ja­maica was third (1:18.03).

Marchan, con­test­ing the girls' 9-10 di­vi­sion 100m freestyle raced to the gold medal in 1:07.92 and Ed­wards fol­lowed in her foot­steps there­after, pick­ing up her sil­ver­ware in the girls 11-12 100m freestyle in 1:03.98. She was fol­lowed in sec­ond by Ba­hamas' Ada­iah Smith (1:04.19) and Bar­ba­dos' Ayoka Mar­tin (1:04.23).

The pair of Ri­an­na Scott from Ja­maica and T&T's Keryn Burke both broke the meet record in splash­ing to the first and sec­ond po­si­tions re­spec­tive­ly in the girls' 13-14 100m freestyle event. Both post­ed 1:00.74 to bet­ter the meet record of 1:01.46. T&T's Is­abel­la Men­doza was third in that race (1:02.55).
