Jonathan Sambrano splashed his way to two individual medals and another in the medley relays when the Aquatics Sports Association of T&T (ASATT) Invitational Goodwill Swim Meet got going at the National Aquatic Centre in Balmain, Couva on Friday.
His performance summed up an overall excellent performance for the T&T team with little Jannai Applewhaite claiming a gold medal in his first international foray, as the T&T team bagged 41 medals, consisting of 14 individual gold, nine individual silver and 10 individual bronze medals, as well as five relay gold and three relay silver.
Applewhaite shook off a bundle of nerves in the Boys' 13-14 100 metres backstroke to lead a one-two finish for team T&T in a time of 1:05.09 with Quillon Leera taking the silver in 1:05.33. Lonny Duncombe of the Bahamas sealed the bronze medal.
That event though was sadly the lone event for Applewhaite, as he waited with confidence oozing out of the ceiling for another race in the relays which never came, as one of his colleagues appeared to have picked up an injury.
However, there was no hindrance for Sambrano on the day, first recording a convincing win in the boys' 11-12 division 100 metres freestyle in a time of 1:00.42, ahead of his countryman Aaron Colthrust (1:02.61) while Jamaica's Howard Wallace (1:03.05) took the bronze.
Later Sambrano was at it again in the boys' 11-12 100m backstroke, where he held off Barbadian Hamani Callender for the gold by clocking 1:15.30. Callender was not too far off in second (1:15.51) with Colthrust taking third (1:16.86).
Still, it was not the end for Sambrano as the talented T&T swimmer returned later on to help his team which also included Colthrust, Mackay Burgess and his brother Joshua Sambrano, to the gold medal in the boys' 11-12 400m medley relay in 4:53.04.
Jamaica's team of Cameron Brown, Howard Wallace, Liam Harrison and Ky-Mani Hendricks took the runner-up spot in 4:59.19 and Barbados' quartet of Callender, Beau Washington, Achebe Smith and Judah Hall-Fox secured third in 5:43.35.
Zahara Anthony, Micah Alexander, Taylor Marchan and Netania Edwards were also among the gold medal winners for the red, white and black on Friday. Anthony, a usual standout for T&T, rushed to the finish in the girls 8 and under 100m freestyle in 1:17.54 for the top spot, holding off Barbados' Gabriella Babb in second (1:17.69) and Sapphire Parks of St Lucia in third 1:18.25.
Alexander followed likewise in the boys' 8 and under 100m freestyle, splashing to the gold medal in 1:14.23. Suriname's Djoel Oldenstam took the runner-up position (1:16.50) and Alex Rainford of Jamaica was third (1:18.03).
Marchan, contesting the girls' 9-10 division 100m freestyle raced to the gold medal in 1:07.92 and Edwards followed in her footsteps thereafter, picking up her silverware in the girls 11-12 100m freestyle in 1:03.98. She was followed in second by Bahamas' Adaiah Smith (1:04.19) and Barbados' Ayoka Martin (1:04.23).
The pair of Rianna Scott from Jamaica and T&T's Keryn Burke both broke the meet record in splashing to the first and second positions respectively in the girls' 13-14 100m freestyle event. Both posted 1:00.74 to better the meet record of 1:01.46. T&T's Isabella Mendoza was third in that race (1:02.55).
