Trinidad and Tobago closed out the third and final day of the 52nd Carifta Games with two gold medals from 800 metres runner Brion Scott and heptathlon athlete Tenique Vincent at the Hasely Crawford Stadium in Mucurapo on Monday night.

The day’s tally of two gold, one silver and five bronze medals helped the host to finish with 25 medals (9 gold, 6 silver and 10 bronze).

Vincent, who led the girls’ open heptathlon from day one, completed her sweep of the seven-discipline event with a total of 5053 points, nearly 400 more than her closest competitor. She dominated across the board—100 metres hurdles, high jump, shot put, 200 metres, long jump.

Javelin throw and 800 metres —leaving no doubt that the gold medal belongs to the red, white, and black after two days of competition for the event. Clementine Carias of Guadeloupe (4701) secured the silver, while the Bahamas’ Aaliyah Evans (4625) claimed bronze.

Trinidad and Tobago’s second gold of the day came from Brion Scott in the boys’ U17 800 metres run. He outpaced the Jamaicans in the final 200 meters to cross the line first in 1:56.48 seconds, ahead of Luke Plummer (1:58.13) and Yohance Carty (1:58.16). Fellow T&T athlete Darion Whiteman just missed out on a podium spot, finishing fourth in 1:59.23.

The medal count for T&T began in the morning session with Michal Paul earning bronze in the boys’ U20 long jump, leaping 7.03m. Jamaica dominated the event, with Amani Phillips (7.49m) and Michael Graham (7.33m) taking gold and silver.

Meanwhile, Vincent kept her heptathlon momentum alive with a strong performance in the long jump, covering 5.55 metres, heading into the final two events with a comfortable lead.

The afternoon session saw a series of finals, and T&T was in the mix throughout the final day’s programme. In the girls’ U20 discus throw, Adrianna Quamina came close to a medal but settled for fourth with a best throw of 47.11 metres. Teammate Ruth Irvine was fifth at 43.25m. The podium belonged to Annae Mackey (Bahamas), Shamoyea Morris (Jamaica), and Marla-Kay Lampart (Jamaica).

Gianna Paul, the reigning and new long jump champion, finished seventh (14.25) in the girls’ U20 100m hurdles event. In the boys’ U17 110m hurdles, Omari Brown false-started, and Devonte Romeo placed sixth (15.33). Cheyne West was sixth (14.16) in the boys’ U20 110m hurdles, in a race where Jamaica’s Shaquane Gordon set a new Carifta record of 13.19.

A bronze medal from Shian Lewis in the girls’ U17 800m (2:15.03) helped reignite Team TTO’s medal charge, followed immediately by Brion Scott’s gold in the boys’ U17 800m.

In the boys’ U20 800m, Keeran Sriskandarajah gave a gutsy performance but placed fourth (1:52.21), just outside the medal positions.
