T&T Cycling Federation (TTCF) president Rowena Williams, the daughter of a famous cycling family, has vowed to continue eradicating a debt that has left the sport in turmoil.
Williams made this revelation soon after she was returned unopposed as president at the Annual General Meeting (AGM) and subsequent Elections last weekend at the National Cycling Centre in Balmain, Couva.
Her re-election to the top spot was her easiest to date, as this time no one had put themselves up for election in any of the positions. Williams said it could be a sign of many things.
"It could mean that people are confident in the people who are going to lead the organisation, it could also mean that a lot of people are unable to commit to the work required. People are not going to put up their names if they are unable to commit," Williams told Guardian Media Sports recently.
"I commend the membership for saying it's either I want to do this or I don't want to do it. We are happy to work for the betterment of the organisation and of course, it is our hope that we continue to work on bringing financial stability to the organisation, so that's my main goal and the entire team is committed to that.
"We continue to work for cycling and the love of it. Cycling has been a passion of mine from birth and I will continue to serve as long as I am able to, and as long as I am given the opportunity to, so thanks to the membership for showing their trust in me for the next four years," Williams said.
In 2021 the federation was saddled with a $1 million debt, which came at the 2017 Pan American Track Cycling Championships at the NCC, however, despite ongoing work to reduce the debt, Williams and her team still have work to do.
"I am committed to completing the work that was started over the past four years which was to bring down the debt that we had. We have been able to make some headway with that so we want to continue that and liquidate it entirely," Williams said.
