Two-time National Calypso Monarch, Roderick “Chucky” Gordon is back on stage this week, not as a seasoned performer he has become but as a young calypsonian from Siparia trying to break into the Port-of-Spain calypso scene of the turbulent 1930s.
The story of the youngster who won the “Chenette Corner Grand Finals” in Siparia and thereafter went looking for his big break in the city is part of the story line of Canboulay Productions’ calypso musical ‘Sing De Chorus’ which opens tomorrow at the Central Bank Auditorium in Port-of-Spain and continues throughout until Sunday with three more shows the next weekend.
Other calypso stalwarts who have joined the cast to bring Calypso’s Golden Age of Atilla, Executor, Roaring Lion and others to today’s generation include extempo maestro, Black Sage; Krisson Joseph, son of the legendary Penguin (Seadley Joseph); soca artiste Lil Bitts and veteran vintage calypso performer David Bereaux, among others.
They will be accompanied by the live music of Marva Newton and the La Cou Kaiso Band. More information of the show is available by calling 663-5463 and emailing singdechorus@gmail.com.
