Police officer denied bail after soliciting money from robbery victim

A Po­lice Con­sta­ble at­tached to the Cap­i­tal City Pa­trol Unit (CCPU) Port of Spain Di­vi­sion, was de­nied bail, when he ap­peared be­fore Mag­is­trate Mau­reen Ba­boolal- Gafoor, at the Port-of-Spain 5th Mag­is­trates’ Court, yes­ter­day.

In a state­ment, the TTPS said Po­lice Con­sta­ble De­on Ince was ar­rest­ed dur­ing an in­tel­li­gence-led ex­er­cise by of­fi­cers of the Pro­fes­sion­al Stan­dards Bu­reau (PSB), af­ter he al­leged­ly so­licit­ed and re­ceived a sum of mon­ey from a vic­tim of a re­port of Rob­bery with Vi­o­lence.

The mat­ter was post­poned to 23rd Oc­to­ber, 2023.

Ac­cord­ing to po­lice re­ports, on Fri­day 6 Oc­to­ber 2023, a woman walk­ing along Char­lotte Street, Port of Spain, was robbed of a quan­ti­ty of Trinidad and To­ba­go cur­ren­cy, Unit­ed States of Amer­i­ca cur­ren­cy, her pass­port and oth­er per­son­al items.

This in­ci­dent went vi­ral via so­cial me­dia there­after.

The TTPS said lat­er that day, a po­lice of­fi­cer ap­proached the vic­tim at the Nel­son Street Hous­ing De­vel­op­ment Plan­nings, Port of Spain, and she re­port­ed to him what hap­pened to her ear­li­er that day.

He al­leged­ly as­sured her that by mid­night he would get back her stolen items.

The TTPS said on Sat­ur­day 7 Oc­to­ber, the of­fi­cer again met with the vic­tim and al­leged­ly as­sured her that he would get back her items, but she had to re­ward him for his ef­forts and a fur­ther re­ward when he re­trieved the items for her.

The woman made a re­port at the of­fice of the Pro­fes­sion­al Stan­dards Bu­reau on Tues­day 10 Oc­to­ber, and WPC Pa­keera was de­tailed to in­ves­ti­gate the mat­ter.

On Wednes­day 11 Oc­to­ber, the woman met with the of­fi­cer at In­de­pen­dence Square, Port-of-Spain, where she al­leged­ly hand­ed over the sum of $1000.00 to the of­fi­cer.

He was im­me­di­ate­ly ar­rest­ed by a team of of­fi­cers from the Pro­fes­sion­al Stan­dards Bu­reau which in­clud­ed ASP Fran­cis, Cpl Joseph and WPC Pa­keera.

Woman Se­nior Su­per­in­ten­dent Suzette Mar­tin and Se­nior Su­per­in­ten­dent Mon­trichard su­per­vised the in­ves­ti­ga­tions.

On Fri­day 13 Oc­to­ber 2023, af­ter meet­ing with the Di­rec­tor of Pub­lic Pros­e­cu­tions Roger Gas­pard S.C., he ad­vised that the ac­cused be charged for the of­fence of Cor­rupt­ly Re­ceiv­ing the sum of $1000.00 as a re­ward to do an act in re­la­tion to his role as a po­lice of­fi­cer, con­trary to the Pre­ven­tion of Cor­rup­tion Act.
